UTas has strong research and teaching programs in relation to the Antarctic continent, temperate marine science and the Southern Ocean. These activities include marine biology and ecology, wild fisheries and aquaculture, marine biotechnology, marine environment (including marine protected areas, marine biodiversity, protection from marine pests and Natural Resource Management), climate change and variability, oceanography, marine chemistry and geoscience, marine law, policy and international relations, Antarctic ecosystems, flora and fauna.

AIMS is one of the most innovative and progressive research laboratories in the world with unparalleled capability in the field of cutting-edge tropical marine science and technology. Its headquarters are ideally located on a 170 hectare coastal site 50 km from Townsville, in a scientific zone surrounded by National Park and Marine Reserve.
